  1. Charbel_Salameh September-2021.
Grand mysterious castle suspended on a lone island in the center of the underworld. Sinister environment surrounded by the cock of crows, the fall of rain and the eruption of thunderstorms. Supreme darkness reigning over the realms. Such is the scenario that crosses my mind each time I listen to the Swedish melodic black metal group Night Crowned.

Following the band’s impressive 2020 debut album Impius Viam, Night Crowned instantly started to work a year later on an even more monumental sequel in the form of Hädanfärd. With two records in two years with only three years passing since the birth of Night Crowned, it is undoubtedly evident that the band are setting a statement in the metal world and instilling their position firmly in the center of the black metal scene. The album opens up perfectly on Nattkrönt with some ominous clean piano notes oozing in at the front, as if a portrait of maniacally screeching bats and hooting owls was slowly materializing in the distance of that aforementioned castle, before unleashing the listener on the hellacious ride that is about to be hurled; what follows next is an assault of blast beats, outrageous riffing and razor-sharp screaming that reflect on the frenzied playing style known to be found in melodic death metal, in particular the intensity of the vocals on top of the adrenaline infused instrumentals made me imagine Mors Principium Est blackening their sound. The track aptly represents the album and fits ideally as the record opener.

Whether it’s a slow simmering buildup or an in your face melodic riff and drum attack, every track begins with its very own special way to keep your interest and attention at high volume. Each song’s structure is a thing of beauty, carried with plenty of twists and dynamics that keep the listener invested. The second single Fjättrad leans more towards a melodic black metal path with the bleakness behind its mood and ambience. The title track, located right in the middle of the tracklist is a breathtaking representation of Night Crowned’s acoustic abilities, serving as a peaceful interlude for all the chaos in-between. If we’re going back to the underworld castle metaphor, then this track symbolizes the inner ward. Gudars Skymning has this stellar moment where a short groovy riff line suddenly appears 30 seconds in, that then transcends into an avalanche of ethereal melodies atop poisonous barking. Grått & …delagt has a beautifully haunting piano intro that builds up with slow drumming and choir chanting that stay a bit behind in the mix, then the vocalist interferes uttering sentences with an evil tone before the track returns back to business with the usual pummeling black goodness.

There seems to be a definite aim upon crafting this record to wrap up the sound with vibrancy and energy that give the listening experience a feeling of discreet opulence and confident superiority. The hard work behind the making of this album has definitely paid off, as this album belongs in the league of the biggest extreme metal releases out there. The production is massive, flowing with sonic potency that renders every portion of the release ringing with sophistication, all while keeping a dense and charismatic coat of harrowing atmosphere. The most prominent aspect to this Sweden based outfit is the textures of refreshing melodies and earworming hooks laminating over their crushing riffs and galloping drums. Moreover, solos are present in almost every track and they’re are all out of this world. The band manages to amplify the epic sensation behind their sound with the use of some theatrical outputs presented through symphonic elements such as keyboards, piano and ritualistic chants. In addition to that, the complementary clean vocals in some tracks functions effectively, offering a more exquisite sound and doubling the venomous effect of the insane growls and screams as they relaunch. All the lyrics are sung in Swedish, granting the album’s mystique more esoteric. There’s a sense of elegance taking hold with each musical note churning, showcasing a high level of compositional grandiosity and seasoned arranging skills that make each track standout alone and showing thorough worthiness of being named a single, with the epic symphonic subsections conveying moments of Dimmu Borgir reminiscence.

With each era of heavy metal unfolding on us, giant bands and future stars are formed. Those potential stars would later on become metal giants of their own present era while other up-and-coming bands take the place of future stars. The modern black metal scene was spearheaded and pioneered by several legends such as Emperor, Dissection, Dimmu Borgir and so on. As time passes by, the behemoths of the present are becoming retired legends, thus potential stars shining in the scene are mandatory to keep the cult alive. And so, it’s bands like Night Crowned making fans such as myself reassured that the fate of this eclectic subgenre of metal lies in good blackened hands. These professional folks are capable of keeping the scene ever so refreshing, charging and robust.

Between Impius Viam and Hädanfärd, I can’t really pick an obvious personal favorite, yet I can easily distinguish the quality upgrade and refinement that the band’s sophomore album was crafted with. Night Crowned have meticulously trademarked a distinctively powerful sound of tremendous magnitude from the get-go of their ever growing career. The band have successfully balanced a mixture of vile black metal aggression and epic melodic death metal magnificence that coexist as one, a perfect execution that can only be concocted from band members of remarkable talent and experience. And with this stellar consistency and relentless work ethic, they are bound to become a stone pillar for black metal and a sought-after festival headliner in the upcoming years.
