Blink-182 (often stylized as blink-182 ) is a band American of pop punk , [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] [ 4 ] formed on August 2 of 1992 by Tom DeLonge (later, in 2015, he would be replaced by Matt Skiba ), Mark Hoppus , and Scott Raynor (who in 1998 would be replaced by Travis Barker ) in Poway , California. They are considered the pioneers of pop punk and one of the bands that contributed to its massive international success in the late 1990s and early 2000s .

Shortly after releasing their first studio album in 1995, Cheshire Cat , it would be their first official album since before they had recorded 3 demos, among them Buddha, which would include one of their biggest hits Carousel , the then band called «Blink »Had to add the number« -182 »to his name because an Irish techno band was already called« Blink »and threatened legal action, 182 was chosen by Mark Hoppus because he was talking on the phone and it was the first what occurred to him. Following Blink-182’s first hit with Dude Ranch in 1997, their second studio album, DeLonge and Hoppus decided to oust their original drummer, Scott Raynor.. The reasons for his dismissal have never been officially clarified by the first two, although Raynor assured in several interviews that it was the fault of his alcoholism . Travis Barker , then drummer of The Aquabats , replaced Raynor and with him the band achieved mainstream and global success with the best-selling Enema of the State , released in 1999 by MCA Records . This success continued with his live album The Mark, Tom and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back) from November 2000, and with Take off your pants and jacket.June 2001. At the end of 2003, after several rehearsals with parallel bands and rumors about their separation, they released what was at that time their last studio album, which was not titled. Just two years later, in 2005, the band made their separation official and, in turn, two groups emerged from this break: Angels and Airwaves led by DeLonge, and +44 with Hoppus and Barker.

The band is known for its satirical and eschatological humor (known in English as toilet humor ). The release of their first album in 1995, Cheshire Cat , coincided with the success of the revival punk rock California and the launch in the same year of classic albums of the punk rock of the west coast as Dookie of Green Day ; Smash by The Offspring and Punk in Drublic by NOFX . The influences of the band, according to Hoppus and DeLonge themselves were NOFX , The Cure ,Dinosaur Jr. , The Descendents, and Screeching Weasel . [ 7 ] With Barker’s arrival on drums, the band achieved a more mature lyrical and musical sound, as demonstrated in one of DeLonge and Barker’s side projects, Box Car Racer .

The band has sold 50 million records worldwide and 13 million in the United States alone . On February 5, 2009 it was announced that the trio would present an award at the Grammy Awards , this being the first time in 5 years that the band performed on stage. [ 5 ] On February 8, as presenters of the award for best rock band , they announced their return. On September 27, 2011 they released their sixth studio album, Neighborhoods . Five years later, in July 2016, they published California, their first job after the departure of Tom Delonge in 2015 and the incorporation of Matt Skiba, where they try to recover their essence adapted to the new times. On September 20, 2019 they release their most recent studio album, Nine .
