Depuis 1983, j'ai participé en tant que fondateur de la station de radio gratuite Radio Cucaracha, située à Oviedo, dans les Asturies, en Espagne, tout en dirigeant et en présentant le programme de Hard Rock Cábala Rock. En 1988 j'ai amené au programme des collègues plus spécialisés dans des styles spécifiques de métal (thrash, death, classique ...) et avec eux nous avons donné vie au nouveau programme que nous avons appelé Hydra 105 sur 105 sur la fréquence modulée de Radio Cucaracha. En 1991, en raison d'un déménagement à Madrid pour des raisons professionnelles, j'ai arrêté de le faire. Jusqu'en 2014 et depuis 1996 j'étais en charge des départements Rock et Metal ainsi que de la vente de disques dans le grand magasin du Corte Inglés de Preciados-Callao à Madrid, l'année de ma retraite. De même, de 1991 à 2000 j'ai collaboré à divers festivals de rock à Madrid et en tant que disc-jockey dans un pub appelé Hebe, dans le quartier Vallecas de Madrid, berceau de grands groupes espagnols tels que Ska-P, Reincidentes, Mama Ladilla et autres. With 2016’s “Burn Up the Night,” Indian heavy metal stalwarts Kryptos have well and truly arrived as a global force to reckon with. This is their 2nd release on German label AFM Records and their 4th overall full length, which finally sees them find their real sound after being around for nearly 2 decades.
Following their previous release (2012’s well-received “The Coils of Apollyon”), this album goes further down the path the band have chalked for themselves. Gone are the melodic death metal and most other harsher influences from their sound, and the band has instead followed what seems to be second nature for them since their beginnings – the classic ’70s and ’80s heavy metal sound with twin guitar harmonies, epic leads, big snare, booming bass, etc. One can hear quite a bit of Def Leppard, Thin Lizzy and of course, Maiden and Priest on this one. The only attribute that ties back to some of their previous influences is the vocals – snarly, raspy, Coroner-esque and not quite centered or over the top in the mix.
Coming to the contents, from the ripping opener to the closing title track, the band takes you on quite a journey. With songs like ‘Blackstar Horizon,’ ‘Waverider,’ ‘One Shot to Kill,’ the title track and the anthemic ‘Full Throttle,’ you’re compelled to pump your fists and bang your head furiously. On the other hand, songs like ‘Unto Elysium,’ and ‘The Summoning’ are more mid-paced, melodic, slightly dark and ponderous. For the latter type, the band has done a good job of pulling off the moodiness while not being too meandering or self-indulgent.
The lyrics again vary from the typical heavy metal variety to ones with a more darker tone, but they’re very, very good. Too often, bands take their lyrics and vocal lines for granted these days, but that doesn’t seem to be the case with Kryptos. The production, again, is on point – pristine where it needs to be and murky enough when required. If I have to note any shortcomings, it has to be with the vocals, I guess. I can’t tell if there isn’t much variation in the vocal delivery, or whether the vocals just aren’t highlighted as much as they should be. They certainly don’t do much to add to the flavor and seem content sitting back on the riffs. Maybe this was intentional? I wouldn’t know. But I’m only nitpicking here.
All in all, this is a hugely enjoyable release and definitely Kryptos’ best so far in my opinion. Even the artwork on the cover and the packaging are just perfect for what the band seems to be going for. Kudos!
