Cosmic Mystery, June 6th, 2018
Written based on this version: 2018, Digital, Season of Mist (Bandcamp)
Being new to Germany’s Alkaloid I did not know what to expect going in besides progressive death metal. Judging by the name, I assumed they would be technical death metal at first or have some amount of technical posture within the music and I was not wrong. None the less, Alkaloid turned out to be a progressive death metal band after conducting some research. Liquid Anatomy sees the band make a second scientific entry in their attempts to achieve molecular magnificence.
Alkaloid has a different way of conveying their message all while keeping the death metal particles active within the atomic blend. This strange approach I speak of can be heard throughout the playing time of Liquid Anatomy. “Azagthoth” and “Liquid Anatomy” are some of the tunes that feature avant garde particles in which Alkaloid distributes circumspectfully. The middle eastern ethnic sounding drums, clean singing, and technical compositions are used to great avail in the process to achieve their alchemical influence and acquire an identity contrasting many bands within the genre. The avant-garde instrumentation gives the music a pinch of mystery and even incites a greater progressive punch. The bass and lead guitars are seriously disciplined, played to perfection and accelerates the music nicely through each stage of rhythmic progression. Everything is tightly mixed and generated; the use of clean singing in a computerized phrase fashion is deeply satisfying to say the least. The intersecting guitar riffs and solos are second to none thus far in comparison to what I have heard from other bands that play the same type of music. Perhaps only a handful of outputs are worth mentioning alongside this implant of ingenuity (Beyond Creation – The Aura; Obscura – Akróasis). Each song is a diverse quest comprised of its own challenging musical constructs that magnetize the listener to partake in thoroughly. “Rise of the Cephalopods” is 19+ minute scientific maelstrom that methodically materializes into mathematical mayhem. This is the accumulation of Alkaloid’s effort, the final line of algebra and quantum physics that completes the equation. This is the testament of the band’s perseverance through each hurdle in their attempt to bring the listener a rarely matched molecule of marvel.
This is quite an adventurous and talented band, their lack of fear to undertake an unconventional method of configuring their compositions is something I strongly commend. Given that Alkaloid is comprised of members from acts such as Obscura, Thulcandra and Dark Fortress amongst many others; I’m not surprised that the final product possesses a quality of such a mountainous velocity. This is truly outstanding work and I urge anyone that is a fan of the genre or any of the aforementioned bands to support this project.
